Initially we will be carrying out 4 tests on composite boards and Inflatable Wings – the test categories are as follows: All round race (14’ x 25-26”) /  performance surf (85-95L) /  longboard surf (100-115L) and Wings  (4m).

Just like our reviews, our tests will include plenty of water time. But our reviews/tests will be very different.

Our SUPboarder reviews go into much more detail on the features and design / construction of products /  explaining the brand / product and test brand claims as well our thoughts (both positive and negative) and who we feel the product is best suited for. Detailed honest information about the kit so you know if it would suit you.  Our reviews  are also a great way for brands to put their products in front of their target market and get independent experts to let consumers know if a product really does what a brand says.

In our tests, we will be looking less at details of the kit itself, but more comparing it to other similar kit on the market, to help you decide exactly which kit is best for you.

Just as we often say, a board best suited to one person may not be best suited for another. So rather than having just one ‘best on test’ we will be allocating numerous awards which better reflects the kit out there, and is also more useful to you .  An example of these awards might be e.g best improver performance surf sup.

Over 40 brands were invited to participate in the tests, at no cost to them – they just have to get the kit to us for the testing period.

Why are we doing it?

We know from popular demand, that SUPboarder readers not only want to know in detail about a range of kit, but also want to hear our thoughts on which is best for them, and which one they should buy. Thorough tests which readers can trust 100%.

SUPboarder PRO members will have already had a glimpse of our kit comparisons in the bonus SUPboarder PRO videos. But we’re keen to expand this further to include even more kit to help you find which board/gear is best for you.

Why is it only available on PRO

From day one our SUPboarder ethos has always been to provide detailed, honest, accurate information which readers can trust, allowing them to make the right kit decisions for them.

We 100% believe that we have achieved our goal and the positive feedback we receive on a daily basis confirms this. The fact brands do not see our reviews until the day they’re published and they have no say in our reviews demonstrates this. We know brands want us to be honest and that they value our feedback, both positive and negative, as this only helps them to improve their products further, which is of benefit to us all.

But whether we like it or not, we all know, when work is involved it unfortunately involves money and somebody has to pay for it! It takes a lot of time to thoroughly review or test,  film  and produce quality videos. SUPboarder is owned, managed and run by a team of passionate paddle boarders, and is not backed by and large publishing houses – were a team of passionate paddleboarders that love what they do but still need to live.

But, SUPboarder is keen to reduce its reliance on paid advertising, which we know is perceived by many to impact what is said in reviews/tests etc…Our reviews have always been 100% honest but when it comes to testing two or more products against each other it’s vitally important money is out of the equation.  If testing is funded by brands, how can it be opened up to all brands?  How can we guarantee brands don’t influence test results?  A bad test result could result in a brand cutting all funding for the magazine, stopping us producing the content all together.

The anwser is that to conduct true quality testing, it must be funded by the consumer.  By doing our kit testing as part of SUPboarder Pro, we see it as an awesome step forward for proper testing that should never be at risk of being influenced by advertisers. SUPboarder PRO allows us to carry out tests in what we see is the only true way. Thanks to all those who are already supporting us by subscribing to SUPboarder Pro.

What are the categories

To start off with we will be testing 4 categories, but we plan to grow these tests over time and appreciate your feedback on how we can improve them further.

In an ideal world we would be testing every single board size in every category, but at present this is just not possible. With most board shapes continuing throughout the ranges you can apply the same style/feel of the boards to other sizes to some degree, and therefore even if the kit we’ve tested is not the size you usually ride, our findings will still be useful.

With limited stock and demo boards available some brands couldn’t take part in the SUPboarderPRO tests this time. But over time we’re confident this will change allowing us to carry out an even wider range of tests with even more kit.

About the testing.

All the kit used in the 4 tests will be used multiple times in a wide variety of conditions, to give us a thorough understanding of when it works best.

We will be testing at a higher level than we’ve ever tested before especially with the race boards. More details about the testing criteria will be included alongside the videos.

Our SUPboarder Pro Tests will be published over the next few months (Nov—Feb) weather and conditions permitting! These tests will only be published when we are confident we have sufficiently tested all the kit, and are able to confidently allocate awards.

SB/ When and where was the first time you tried a foil?

AA/ I think the first time I ever tried a foil was in about 1983 at a windsurf event in the San Fran Bay area when I was doing a race there

SB/ How different was your foil then to how it is today?

AA/ It was drastically different than what I usually use today. It was using a double V or W shaped foil that was mounted or really strapped to the bottom of a windsurfer one design board.

SB/ Can you talk us briefly through the developments of foils, and the main changes we’ve seen?

AA/ Main advancement in Foils was when I tried or invented the newer thicker foils. Foils we were using were mostly used for kite surfing, air chairs and Tow in foiling. These foils were all thinner Foils at about 15 mm or Thinner( somewhere thinner than  9/16″). I had been approached by Kai Lenny to make something to SUP better than the kite surf foil I had given him. So I thought about it for a while and came up with an idea that the thicker foil would create more lift at slower speeds. I worked for a couple weeks modifying my existing Kite Foil wings into a Thicker Version and then tested it and wallah, it worked!

SB/ Foiling isn’t new. So why do you think it took so long to gain momentum and get to where it is today?

AA/ The “KEY” or missing link, was the making of the newer thicker Foil sections as it lets you perform at a much higher level without your own power source like a Kite, Sail, or a power source like a jetski motor or whatever. Thicker Foils produce higher lift at slower speeds. And Truthfully, I wonder why no one else had tried it before as I was only making kite Foils for about 5 years and many others had been doing Foils for much longer than I… I guess we were all just trying to go faster and faster and not slower!

SB/ Where do you see foiling going – both in the surf and on flat water?

AA/ It is not just contained to Surf and Flat Water which will continue to progress but Foiling will start spreading more and more whether it is Sailboats, Powerboats, Windsurfers, Surfers, Kiters, Wakeboards, Wing Foil boards, etc. It is just a more advanced way of getting through water. There is less effort (friction), longer rides, and more speed. Look at it like it is just Evolution in the World of Watersports…

SB/ Who do you see as really pushing the foil boundaries and taking the riding to the next level?

AA/ If you are talking about Water Board Sports , it is obviously the youngsters! In all sports , it is the Youngsters who will take it Next Level. Although, some of the “oldies” still look pretty impressive!

SB/ Can you tell us what you’re working on now with regards to foil developments (what really excites you!?)?

AA/ Right now, I am working on a lot of different aspects on the Foil side like our New GL wings which are higher aspect and fast for more gliding for the end users experience. We at Go Foil are always working on new stuff trying to stay ahead of the others.  I am also intrigued by the new Foil Wing, Wingsurfer, or whatever the generic name will end up being called. This Concept or contraption  is easier for most people to learn than Windsurfing or Kite surfing. So Far Downwind foiling is not easy for the masses but the Foil Wing will let this happen and is a lot of fun! You don’t have to go just downwind either as I can go pretty well upwind too on the Foil Wing.  Also , You don’t have the same problems of launching a kite in a restricted area like “The Hatchery” where I just was in the Gorge. I did a Downwinder from there to the Event Site and had a blast and I have only tried the Wing Thing 4 Times so far.!

. . It never caught on before, when it was called the Wind Weapon because it did not have the power and speed to get going and make it fun for the average Joe. Now with the bigger Foils like our Maliko 200, you can get up and Go on these Wings!

Might be fun to ride in the Surf,Lakes,Rivers, just about everywhere..Evolution again…

SB/ Any top tips for someone thinking about giving foiling a go?

AA/ Here are a couple Beginner Tips, where a leash, start in small surf if you are trying in waves, and also stay away from other people . Foiling is a Front Leg Sport so put lots of weight on your front leg. Another tip is to try to get your feet on or across the center line of your board. I call it getting to the toeside of the board or put lots of weight on your toes when first learning while standing towards the toe side of the board.

“Foiling will change your life, it is so addicting that once you get it dialed, you will want to do it all of the time!”
